Bandsaws

We have two bandsaws currently in operation at the Maker Station.

Wear safety glasses or goggles, or a face shield (with safety glasses or goggles). Wear hearing protection that is suitable for the level and frequency of the noise you are exposed to in the woodworking area. Wear protective footwear when required.

Info

There are two bandsaws at the station. If you are new to woodworking, ask for a demo of getting set up properly.

Basic checks before turning on.

  • Tension wheel is set (otherwise blade will break more easily)
  • Guidepost is set close to material height and locked
  • Blade tracking is good - staying in center of wheel can be adjusted

The smaller yellow bandsaw is great for most projects.

The larger craftsman bandsaw has a lot more power and depth/width - but requires more care.

SAFETY

  • Eye Hazard safety glasses are a good idea!
  • Finger Hazard keep fingers clear of cutting blade and area near blade. Use a scrap piece of wood to remove debris.
  • Hearing Hazard bandsaws can be loud - hearing protection may be desired

Guidepost bade should be set to about 1/8th inch above material Ensure the blade is tracking correctly (staying in center of wheel through window) and runs freely through guidewheels. Ensure the blade is under proper tension (tension wheel is at top) Hold material firmly. Bandsaws can cut quickly. Use scrap to remove any debris or material from near blade. Keep hands and fingers away from blade. Make relief cuts when doing any sort of curve. Bandsaws do not handle turns well. Blades will break. Keep the floor around a band saw clean and free of obstructions or clutter - trip hazard!

Adjustments

There are several adjustments that can be made to the bandsaw, with videos online

  • Guidepost height
  • Upper Guidewheels
  • Lower Guidewheels
  • Tension
  • Tracking

Blade Replacement

The large craftsman bandsaw takes 99.75inch blades. These are about $20 currently on amazon or can be ordered in a multipack. Specifications are on rear of bandsaw. The <other> bandsaw takes <?> inch blades. These can also be ordered.

Blades are sharp! It is very easy to accidentally touch a tooth of the blade and get cut. Keep others clear during change as well.
