Welcome to The Maker Station!

-- Marietta's Makerspace --

The Maker Station Inc is home to a vibrant community of local makers in Cobb County and the greater Atlanta metro area.
Here curious and like-minded folks come together to work on projects, discover new areas of interest, develop a new business idea, or simply grow their personal hobbies. The makerspace is a 100% volunteer driven 501c3 non-profit corporation. We are a valuable resource for Smyrna, Marietta, Kennesaw, Acworth, and surrounding metro areas.
We started our journey in 2014 to build a makerspace close to home and welcome all interested community members to help grow and shape this makerspace / hackerspace into a thriving, collaborative environment.

What is this place, makerspace, hackerspace?
The Maker Station is a recently formed makerspace in Marietta, Georgia. Our vision is to be a leading contributor in the maker community by providing tools, instruction, and a creative environment for all ages in order to foster the do-it-yourself spirit embodied by the maker movement.

A makerspace is a community-oriented, shared workspace where people with common interests can learn, share, and collaborate while working with any and all types of construction materials or media. There has been much written about makerspaces over the past few years, we simply recommend that you check out the Wikipedia's entry on Maker Culture or google makerspace if you would like to read more.

Non-profit?
We are a Georgia non-profit corporation. We are a 501(c)(3) public charity as recognized by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service.

How are materials supplied?
A percentage of monthly member dues is reserved for purchase of materials, supplies, and equipment.
Special events and projects may require additional fees to cover the cost of project specific materials.

What happens if I break a tool?
Broken Tool Policy: If you break at tool at the Maker Station makerspace, please let someone know so that we can assess the safety risk.
There is no cost or penalty for breaking tools, we understand that these things happen.
However we need assess the situation and decommission tools to prevent the next person from unknowingly using a broken tool.

Broken tools will be replaced at the next tool buying opportunity as the budget allows.

Materials & Supplies
Due to limited space at the Maker Station, materials and equipment donations must be approved by the Board of Directors. We ask that only equipment in good working order be donated. We are not a repair shop nor a recycling facility, and generally unable to salvage material "just in case it may be useful", etc.

Large equipment and guest donations must be vetted by the board prior to acceptance. Contact the board (info@themakerstation.com) if you would like to make donations.

The following ARE NOT ACCEPTED at any time:
* CRT Monitors and Televisions
* Hazardous Material, paints, solvents, etc
* Broken or discarded appliances and electronics
* Basically anything that costs money to dispose of properly

Loaning equipment? I have equipment that I want to loan
Loaned equipment is much appreciated. However the Maker Station can not take any responsibility for loaned equipment and so if you loan equipment, you accept all risk that it may become worn out, broken, etc.

What is the password to the 3D printer station?
The 3D printer workstation password is provided via email upon joining the Maker Station and being a member in good standing. If you are a member and need the password, contact the board: info@themakerstation.com

What is the wifi password?
The wifi password is provided via email upon joining the Maker Station and being a member in good standing. If you are a member and need the password, contact the board: info@themakerstation.com

Where can I find some ___? (Bolts, Bearings, Leather, etc)
We have a community-maintained list of vendors on the Materials and Supplies page.

Kids? Are kids welcome, kid activities?
Kids are definitely welcome. Most of the Station's board members have kids of various ages and we certainly intend to make the space kid friendly and welcoming to families.
That being said, the Maker Station is primarily a work space for tinkerers and hobbyists to talk shop, compare notes, and collaborate on projects. The space does contain dangerous power tools and sometimes hazardous materials. Our goal is to keep the space PG-13. The space is not a day care and kids can not be left unattended.

Kid Activities?: We are still a new space, as such we currently do not have specific/recurring activities for kids. However kids are welcome at the majority of our events. Check out our meetup page.

Home School Activities?: We are still new. We encourage any motivated parents to take the lead on organizing home schooling events during school hours. Contact the board (info@themakerstation.com) if you are interested in leading a home school event or activity at the space.

What about getting a forge, blacksmithing, welding, metal fabricating, auto lift, etc?
We are all excited to make big awesome things that require fire power... however, we are currently not equipped to supply all of these. In our new location, we do have limited capability for hot-work outside the loading dock door. No hot-work should be performed inside the facility and only outside with proper preparation, training and safety equipment available. Prior to performing any hot-work, please discuss your project with the board to make sure it is within guidelines and proper procedures and training are in place.

Are there any other makerspaces in the Atlanta area?
Yes, Atlanta has a fairly active maker community. If you know of other makerspaces to list here, email us at: info@themakerstation.com
Donate to the Maker Station Inc
The Maker Station Inc is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. Your donation helps us make a local makerspace here in Cobb County and cover operating expenses: rent, utilities, and upkeep.

Donation Money
The Maker Station, Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. A letter will be provided indicating that no goods or services were exchanged for this donation and that your contribution is 100% tax deductible.

Recurring monthly financial donations can also be made through our secure 3rd party payment processor, gumroad.com.
The input form shows a $20+ suggested value, but you are free to type in any amount of $5 or greater.
We are not a repair shop nor a recycling facility, and generally unable to salvage material "just in case it may be useful", etc.

Contact the board (info@themakerstation.com) if you would like to make donations.

About Me
For as long as I can remember, I've tinkered with anything I could get my hands on. Pretty much every toy or gadget I've ever owned has been disassembled and reassembled out of curiosity. I've also had access to computers since a very young age starting with a TRS-80 (which belonged to an older brother) and then my very own Apple IIc when I was only seven. Not surprisingly, my hobbies and interests have guided my education and career. I received a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Alabama in 1997. During that time I worked not only on aerospace engineering, but also did student research on genetic algorithms and fuzzy logic. Some of that work was performed at NASA Marshall in Huntsville as part of a summer intern program. Then I worked as an Engineer at Lockheed Martin for several years, before finally jumping into software development where I have been working ever since. Not satisfied with just designing aircraft, I earned my private pilot's license in 2011.

About Me
For as long as I can remember, I've tinkered with anything I could get my hands on.
-- Marietta's Makerspace --

The Maker Station Inc, Cobb County's finest makerspace / hackerspace, is a collaborative, shared workspace (makerspace / hackerspace) northwest of Atlanta, GA.

Powering Up
# Remove dust cover and make sure area is free of obstructions both inside the laser cutter and in the surrounding area.
# Plug in and turn on the powerstrip behind the laser cutter
# Make sure the water pump is running, that water is flowing through through the feeder tubes to the laser, and that there are NO leaks!
# Power up the computer running the CAM software
# Plug in the USB connection to the controller board on the side of the laser cutter
# Turn on the Motor Controller switch on the side of the laser cutter
# Turn on the Laser Cutter switch on the side of the box to power the laser.
# Make sure the "puffer" pump and the exhaust fan is running.
# To disperse any fumes or smoke, extend the vent hose to exhaust outside underneath the roll-up door.

Test Alignment and Focus
# Launch the "CNC USB Controller" application from the desktop
# You can use the X and Y inputs in the application to jog the laser head to the appropriate position. (there is an alignment cutout placed inside the laser cutter that basically shows the zero reference point)
# It is recommended to perform a straight line cut on an angled block to determine the proper height of material for the best focus. (Z is not easily adjustable, so shimming material is the current method.)
## (Add link to sample gcode to cut test line)
# Shim your material to the property height as determined by the previous step
# Perform test cuts on your desired material and adjust power setting (potentiometer on side of laser cutter box) to find appropriate levels. (Less is better, try to find the minimum power that will make sufficient cuts to reduce burning)

Cutting
# Launch the "CNC USB Controller" application from the desktop
# Import your GCODE for your desired cut.
# NOTE Make sure you do not have any G28 commands in your gcode!! This will home the laser which will include the Z-axis. On this cutter, moving the Z axis DOWN will fire the laser. Moving Z axis UP will turn off the laser.
# Jog the laser to the appropriate position on your material relative to your model to be cut and set the new zero point with the appropriate left toolbar button.
# DO NOT HIT "Go to Zero"! See above.
# Hit the play button to execute your gcode

Stopping
If your material starts to burn, stop the processing, and immediately extinguish the flames.
# If the gcode is running, hit the Stop button TWICE!
# If the laser is on, jog the Z axis up, to turn it off
# If the laser is still on, turn off the Laser switch on the side of the laser cutter box

Advanced Operational Knowledge
There are some more advanced tasks that not everyone needs to know to do XXXXX, but needs to know to troubleshoot:
#
# Autodesk Fusion laser Cutter(Water jet mode) primer: http://fusion360.autodesk.com/learning/learning.html?guid=GUID-C14B9F20-3A39-4930-971E-BDFE268384B9

Warnings
* Keep loose hair and sleeves away from all moving parts.
* Beware of hot parts.
* Beware of dust, fumes, choking hazards.
* Never leave machine unattended

Safety
* Do not stare at the laser, it is very bright and can damage your vision
* Do not operate the laser with the lid open
* Do not look through any cutouts or openings at the firing laser. It can damage your vision.
* Make sure the exhaust is vented as appropriate for the materials you are cutting.
* If you are cutting plastics, make sure you understand what exhaust gases will be produced. (Some are toxic!!)
* Never leave the laser cutter operating unattended for any reason! EVER! This poses a very real fire hazard and should be monitored at all times.

Donations? I have equipment or material that I want to donate...
Cash Money Donations
If you are interested in donating money to support the space, please submit using this link:

http://donate.themakerstation.com/donations

Thank you

Materials & Supplies
Due to limited space at the Maker Station, only dues paying members in good standing are able to donate materials and equipment based on their
discretion.

* CRT Monitors and Televisions

How can I get the code for the lock box at the front door?
The code for the lockbox is provided via email upon joining the Maker Station and being a member in good standing. If you are a member and need the code, contact the board: info@themakerstation.com

Welcome to The Maker Station! Marietta's Makerspace!

The Maker Station Inc, Cobb County's finest makerspace / hackerspace, is a collaborative, shared workspace (makerspace / hackerspace) northwest of Atlanta, GA. Here curious and like-minded folks come together to work on projects, discover new areas of interest, develop a new business idea, or simply grow their personal hobbies. The makerspace is a 100% volunteer driven non-profit corporation. We are a valuable resource for Symrna, Marietta, Kennesaw, Acworth, and surrounding metro areas. We started our journey in 2014 to build a makerspace close to home and welcome all interested community members to help grow and shape this makerspace / hackerspace into a thriving, collaborative environment.

About Me
For as long as I can remember, I've tinkered with anything I could get my hands on.

Who We Are
The Maker Station is a collaborative, shared workspace (makerspace / hackerspace) where curious and like-minded individuals come together to work on projects, discover new areas of interest, develop a new business idea, or simply grow their personal hobbies. The makerspace serves the interstate corridor northwest of Atlanta, GA. This includes Marietta, Kennesaw, Acworth, and surrounding areas. We started our journey in 2014 to build this space and we are looking for interested community members to help grow and shape this makerspace / hackerspace into a thriving, lively environment.
